The 7 C’s of a Successful Resume

Your resume may have taken many hours to perfect. However, there’s no excuse to double-check everything after it’s finished. The important thing is to edit it with fresh eyes, maybe a day or two after it was written. This will allow you to see it from an outsider’s perspective. Every detail of the application paper is crucial. You never know what only HR will see during their 20 second scan of your data.

Make sure you edit your resume in a way that your key skills are easily recognized and seen. Additionally, you need to take note of the following qualities to ensure you have a successful resume:

1. Consistency

Everything should be consistent in overall vision, from the layout of your copy to its grammatical composition. Consistency is a great virtue for nailing the first impression even before the hiring manager reads your resume. Project your credibility and trustworthiness. So, if you don’t want your application to end up in the trash for the first few seconds, maintain impeccable grammar and a professional image, even if it’s only on paper.

2. Personalized and specific

Never use the same resume for two different jobs. This won’t give you a very good image because the hiring manager will think you included irrelevant background or skills because you have nothing else to write on your resume. You can never be successful in your job search without tailoring your resume to fit exactly the needs and tastes of your employers.

3. To complete

Never leave gaps in your story and background. Cover them in a witty but truthful way. You can always write “freelance” or “I’m studying for a degree.” Or, if there’s no other possible way to make up for these gaps in your copy, candidly indicate that you’re unemployed instead of writing nothing. Hiring managers know that lying candidates are always smart about hiding details, and will get suspicious if you leave a long gap in your story.

4. Clean and professional

No, the job market is not a game show. It’s definitely not the place for colorful gimmicks. So ditch your urge to use flashy fonts and colorful borders and dividers. Yes, you’ll get noticed for a show like that, but you bet it won’t go beyond that big HR office confetti quagmire.

5. Intelligent

If you keep comparing your documents to the average application documents, you’ll get what you want: a place in the middle, on probation, or on who knows maybe a list of hiring managers. So, if you are competing for excellent results, personalize it in a unique and impressive way. All those people at the top just settle for kickass.

6. Thoughtful

Have some respect for your employer’s time. Accept the fact that they can only give your resume a maximum of 30 seconds. This way, you not only give them their respective time, but also maximize attention to what matters. Guess what, it actually pays off.

7. Compelling

Good news: Applicants naturally have the knack of guessing what the employer wants to hear from them. Bad news: They don’t usually follow this instinct. So get to know the personality and culture of the company you’re applying to, and obey your common sense. Write down what you think they want to know about you. The only way to create a compelling and successful resume is to say what’s important to them, not what’s important to you.
