Trusting God and Overcoming Fears

2 Timothy 1:7 “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been afraid. From childhood I learned that any number of terrible things could happen to me when I left the house. I could get hit by a car, roller skate into a tree and need stitches, or be stolen by a stranger. People I knew could do mean and hurtful things to me also. I was told that even our neighbors were not to be trusted, as the informed my parents about all the ‘awful’ things I was doing when they were at work. Sharing myself with family and schoolmates brought disapproval and rejection. No one and nowhere was truly safe. Life was a series of disasters to avoid. And I gave it all I had to escape them.

When I became a Christian in my teens, I really wanted to throw my arms open wide and embrace all that God had for me. I wanted to trust Him with my life but…what if He let me get hurt? What if He couldn’t be trusted either? I couldn’t chance it. So I pulled fled to the safety of religion and the do’s and don’ts that most people think of as Christianity.

Somewhere in my mid thirties, things began to change when I learned a lesson about fear from my children. We were visiting a theme park in New Hampshire when my girls spotted the ‘Polar Coaster’. It was love at first site for them, but I was afraid of roller coasters. They wanted to ride it and their dad was happy to take them, so I didn’t have to go. But suddenly, I realized that I was being ridiculous. My young children were about to do something that had me paralyzed with fear and they were excited about it. That day I had to begin to confront my fears. I went on that kiddie coaster and found out that it was actually fun. That day, I found a new mission; to take on my fears and overcome them. Since then I’ve tackled many crazy coasters and now I really enjoy them. I learned that giving in to fears allows them to appear much bigger than they really are but when we stand up to them, they evaporate.

Fear can control a person’s spiritual life also. It can keep you in bondage so you are afraid to really live. Fear can chain God’s people to ‘safe’ Christianity. It can keep you from ever getting out of the boat to walk on the water, from confronting our own ‘Goliaths”, from trusting God to be what He says He is if we’ll only give Him a chance. Christians can become so absorbed by what if’s that they never really do anything.

Fear can come into our lives even when we do our best to avoid it. Of all of my fears, the most difficult to overcome was facing the death of my father and having to take care of my mother, who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Though I wished for a way out, there was no way to avoid this one. I wish I could say that I handled it well, but in truth, fear almost defeated me. If it were not for the steadfast example and support of my husband and some wonderful friends, I would have been lost to my terror. They were a source of hope and encouragement, sharing with me how they overcame similar troubles. I came out of my trials with a few scars but also, I learned a few essential things; that God was real, that He could be trusted to work things out at the right time, and that He had good things planned for my life.

“The thing which I greatly feared had come upon me, and that which I dreaded had come to me,” (Job 3:25) but it did not defeat me. And I had learned that to confront a fear is to overcome it. Facing my fears became a way for me to grow my faith in the Lord. I wanted to see that He would be with me as I moved forward, that the same God who formed the heavens and the earth and everything upon it could care for me. I had to learn to surrender myself to the hands of the One who loved me enough to die for me so that I would have life forever. Death is the ultimate fear, and yet Jesus tells us that He overcame death and because He did, so would we. ” If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection.” (Romans 6:5).

Facing fear is never easy. It takes a conscious choice to step forward into the path of what is causing the fear. It requires taking control of the screaming emotions and the mind that sends all types of negative thoughts to consider. As Christians, God tells us “we (must learn to) take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ,” (2 Corinthians 10:5). You must be willing to surrender the outcome to Jesus and ask for His plan for your life, then trust Him however it works out. And you must be willing to take the first step to face your fear. With each step you take, you will grow in your faith so that you can begin to take on greater things. Until God’s people begin to trust the God we say we follow, we will never willingly put our lives fully into His hands. We won’t be able to take the steps needed to move beyond fear and live surrendered, obedient lives that will be a witness to others of who God is and what He can do with anyone who is willing to trust Him.

Jesus told His followers that “whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it,” (Matthew 16:25). This life is so short. In just a moment and it will be over, so what are YOU waiting for? The life you have been given is a treasure, a gift from God Himself. It was not meant to be hidden safely away. It was meant to be embraced. It was meant to be truly lived in freedom from fear, in joy, in trust in the One who created us with a purpose, Who will fulfill that purpose, and Who will bring us safely home. Will you let fear continue to keep you from your life or will you launch out into the unknown, trust God to show you all that He’s prepared for you, and trust Him to lead you safely along the way? My advice is “Go for it”. Face those fears. Find others who will support you as you do. Refuse to listen to the voice of doubt. The longer you let it bully you, the larger it will grow. Identify your fear, give it to God, and move forward and overcome it. You’ll be glad you did.
