Growing Up With Cards and Games

Summer and games go hand in hand for me.

When I was a kid, my family had a cottage on a pond in northern Minnesota. Both electricity and plumbing were missing, which was fine by me; I liked the camping feel but still had a comfortable bed to sleep in at night. The only downside was an outhouse that was half a block from the cottage and wasn’t a fun trip at night. My mother solved this problem by creating a “honey pot” that we all used at night and one of us emptied in the morning (although I suspect my mother ended up with work more often).

In the evenings our light came from kerosene lamps and a large brick fireplace. After my father, mother, brother and I returned from evening fishing (or on a rainy day), we played cards by the fireplace; kerosene lamps hung overhead to illuminate the coffee table in the center. We played gin rummy, 500 rummy and schmier, a game I remember being a bit like bridge. (If anyone knows how to play smear please contact me as I need a tutorial!) I was especially fond of gin rummy and used to win more than my share of games but usually couldn’t beat my dad. Looking back, I’m not sure which was better; card games or quiet family evenings. However, I grew up treasured by both.

At one point, we added Monopoly to the list, but I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with that game. If you’re winning, that’s great. Your houses lined up on the board and the pile of money in front of you got bigger every time someone shook the dice and landed on your property. But if you missed out on buying the best properties, every roll of the dice drove you deeper and deeper into debt, maybe a bit like real life! I couldn’t stand the slide into poverty and was usually very relieved when I lost all my money and could quit the game.

Sure, Scrabble has always been a firm favourite, but as the youngest, I was a bit hampered by my vocabulary. I didn’t know short words like Qi at the time. Xu, Qua and Za who fit into small spaces and earned a lot of points. Today I play Scrabble every day online with friends and use these words regularly although I have to admit that I still have no idea what they mean.

In college I was introduced to Bridge. I have seen friends play; listening to their offers and studying their plays. When I met Barry, my future husband, I had only played a few times. After we got engaged, he and I were invited to dinner and a game of bridge at a married friend’s house. I was nervous and felt like a child; these couples were four or five years older than me and actually lived in houses, rather than dormitories. By the end of the night, I was feeling more confident and felt that my bridge game had been pretty good. As soon as we were in the car, Barry turned to me and said, “Never, ever bid a three-card suit!” He married me anyway and even taught me how to bid properly.

For several years we played party bridge with twelve friends who were, for the most part, on our level. We each rotated around three different tables and partners. However, there was one man in the group who took the game very seriously. Being his partner meant opening yourself up to four hands of verbal abuse. I didn’t say anything at the time, but this older, wiser version of myself wasn’t going to keep his mouth shut!

I once (and only once) played duplicate bridge. We were living on a military base in Japan at the time, and a friend asked me to fill in for a duplicate bridge game once a week while she stopped by to have a baby. By this point, my bridge game had greatly improved and I immediately said yes. But I soon discovered that this game had very little in common with party bridge. There was a deathly silence in the room, broken only by the sound of silent offerings at each table. The emphasis was on every hand and the score cards were meticulously kept. Also, the hands have been carefully substituted for the next player.

After they finished playing all hands, everyone gathered to see where they ended up on the points list. I was next to last, only a few points ahead of a ninety-year-old woman who had dementia. The game only lasted two hours but it felt like eight. When I got home, I had a terrible headache. When Barry walked in the door, I was lying on the sofa, an ice pack on my head and a glass of wine and a bottle of aspirin on the table next to me.

When our kids arrived, we both spent hours playing kids games like Candy Land, Old Maid, Go Fish, and Chutes and Ladders. Though those toys disappeared as our kids got older, our play closet is now stocked with all of them, looking forward to our granddaughter’s next visit. I find it more fun to play this time than when our kids were little. I’m pretty sure the reason for this is because we can enjoy playing with our grandchild without the anxieties that have accompanied our children’s education. The grandchildren are just fun!

With the advent of computers, we can also play many online games. As I said before, I play at least ten games of Scrabble with friends and family, but these move slowly with only one move per player per day. Also, I’m addicted to the Microsoft Solitaire Collection which includes a daily challenge in five different solitaire games. Collect points that grow each day until you (hopefully) reach the golden bell by the end of the month, when scoring starts again. If you miss a few days, you fall behind on your games. Catching up can be fun if you don’t mind a marathon (or two) of computer games. And this is where the addiction begins!

Since we live in Florida, we’ve been introduced to two new games that we play with friends. The first is Rummikub, a board game that is very similar to 500 rummy. Barry and I play with three friends every two months and usually lose. A friend has been playing this game for years with a group in her hometown. They play for money, a penny a point and she would like us to do that too. I’d be willing for Barry or I to win once in a while, but at the rate we’re going now, it’s not going to happen anytime soon.

The other game we play with friends in our neighborhood is Mexican Train, a domino game. The strategy is fun, but the best part about this game is pressing the button in the center of the plastic train that makes a loud “Choo cho, choo cho”. Of course, you have to win the game before you can hit the button, and unfortunately that doesn’t happen to me very often. So I occasionally cheat and hit the button for fun.

As you may have already guessed, I don’t seem to win very often. However, I have decided that, for me, winning is not the point of the game. Of course, I’d rather win than lose, but since it’s not in the “cards”, I focus on other things, such as strategy, taking tricks, combining the correct numbers, and adding up all the points. other get! I also tell myself that playing should be good for the mind. But the best part of games is spending time with good friends, eating delicious food and building good memories in this stage of my life.
