High School Wrestling: Peaking for the End of the Season

During my senior season of high school wrestling, I “came” at just the right time. I was conference champion, section champion, and district champion. By winning the district tournament, I qualified for the state tournament. I was beaten in the first round 5-2 and never had the opportunity to fight back. However, I had improved from previous seasons. In my sophomore year, I placed 4th in conference and 3rd in sectionals. My senior year, I placed 2nd in conference and 3rd in districts. Towards the end of the season I always ran out of strength and motivation and never qualified for the state tournament. What was the change during my senior season?

First, I had much better control of my diet during my senior season. I was counting calories and slowly losing weight. I’ve never gone a day without eating. I’ve never been hungry or dehydrated. I didn’t feel weak towards the end of the season. I kept getting stronger. Therefore, my attitude was also different. I was confident and had a real desire to qualify for the state tournament. The previous two seasons I felt weak and didn’t want it enough.

How can a wrestler peak by the end of the season? Let’s look at things a bit.

Periodization

Periodization simply involves planning your training for the season or even the entire year. The season is divided into several stages. Tudor Bompa says, “Normally, a peak performance is expected to occur during the competitive stage and cannot be maintained forever.” Similarly, Mark Ginther says, “Peak condition is impossible to maintain for more than a couple of weeks tops.” Sure, you want to win every game. Also, you want to be in excellent condition. However, you can’t be in top condition all season. Therefore, your coach will likely make you do a higher volume of work early in the season. Towards the end of the season, you’ll likely be doing a lower volume of work but a higher intensity. Your ultimate goal is to peak for postseason tournaments like league, district, and state.

Conditioning

As I mentioned, your work volume should decrease when you want to peak towards the end of the season. However, your workouts may be more intense. Intensity and brevity is the key. Towards the end of the season, you may start thinking more about match strategy. You can start practicing “situations” that may arise in a game. What will you do if you lead by one point in last position with only ten seconds left in the game? You should most likely stand up. Obviously you don’t want to do a granby roll and try to pin your opponent. You have to be smart and keep that edge.

Technique

Drilling is important to peaking. If you practice your moves religiously throughout the season, they will become second nature. Winning those postseason competitions will be easier if your technique is impeccable and comes naturally.

Recovery

Recovery encompasses many things. Make sure you get enough rest. Ideally, you should get eight to ten hours of sleep every night. Some wrestlers find contrast showers (alternating hot and cold water) helpful after training. A warm bath before bed can be relaxing and can help you sleep better. Also, don’t forget about nutrition.

Intense wrestling and conditioning deplete muscle glycogen and destroy muscle tissue. Therefore, after your workout make sure you consume proteins and carbohydrates. A whey protein shake and a fast-digesting carbohydrate source can be beneficial after wrestling training in regards to recovery.

Attitude

Are you energized and motivated or exhausted from the long season? I hope you are excited and motivated to win. How much do you want to qualify for the state tournament? Those wrestlers with an extreme desire to win will most likely wrestle their best. Winning or losing is not the end of the world. However, if you don’t care if you win or have no confidence in your abilities, then you will be at a disadvantage.

Anyone can be beaten. Dan Gable was beaten in his last college game. Rulon Gardner defeated Alexander Karelin who had been undefeated for thirteen years in international competition. A wrestler from the University of Iowa named Matt Egeland was seeded eighth in the 1985 NCAA Wrestling Tournament but finished as 2nd. He defeated the number one seeded wrestler along the way. I had a teammate in high school who was the bottom seed in the district tournament, but he beat the top seed and qualified for the state tournament. Anything can happen in postseason tournaments. Be sure of yourself.

Tapered

Tapering involves reducing your total training volume. This gives your body extra rest. You can still do short, intense workouts. You can still practice and focus on your skills and strategy. But the total amount of wrestling and conditioning should be reduced before that big postseason tournament.

Dan Gable and the University of Iowa

In Mike Chapman’s book hard fight, discusses Dan Gable and the University of Iowa wrestling program. Coach Gable would sometimes have his wrestlers train twice a day before the NCAA championships. This seems to go against the idea of tapering, although I don’t know how long these practices lasted and how intense they were. Coach Gable even had Ed Banach do a third workout at 5 a.m. Ed Banach won the NCAA Tournament that year in large part because of that extra workout where he practiced his knocking technique. Would you be willing to pay that price to reach the pinnacle of success? Remember what I wrote earlier about drilling? Drilling pays off.

The film Hoosiers it is very inspiring. Before the state finals, the coach tells his team, “Forget the crowds, the size of their school, their fancy uniforms, and remember what got us here. Focus on the fundamentals we’ve been repeating over and over again, and most important part, don’t get caught up in the thought of winning or losing this match. If you put your effort and focus into playing to your potential, to be the best you can be, i don’t care what the scoreboard says at the end of this game, in my book, we’ll be winners!”

At the beginning of the film, the coach says, “There is one condition in tournaments: don’t talk about the next rung until you’ve climbed the one in front of you.”

I think that’s good advice. Focus on your fundamentals in the postseason championship series. Take one game at a time and be determined to fight for your potential.

Bottom line, peaking can be tricky. Make sure you get enough rest. Practice your skills non-stop. Make your workouts higher volume early in the season and shorter, more intense workouts as the season nears its end. Make sure you are mentally focused and confident in your abilities.

With a proper peak, you’ll be refreshed, rested, and ready to battle at your best!
