Yo-Yo Health Habits and How to Stop

We usually hear about “yo-yo” dieting, but in reality, people are tempted to approach many other health habits in that up-and-down style. What is yoyo? When you try to diet or get healthy in an all-or-nothing way, then you’re yo-yoing. These health habits make you feel good when you’re on the mend, successfully executing all the rules you’ve set. Once you run out of motivation to practice health habits at such a rigorous level, you enter the crappy recession of this practice. All the progress you’ve made can seem to vanish overnight. How do you break this vicious circle?

Yo-yo habits burden your body by not allowing health to settle into a steady rhythm. With so many ups and downs, the body doesn’t feel rested or truly cared for. Habits are also intertwined with mental-emotional ups and downs. To break the cycle, this style of healthiness needs to be recognized for what it really is: a diversion rather than true self-care. When you decide to go from nothing to everything, from total abandonment to constant pressure on your mind and body to do one thing, true health habits don’t have a chance to develop.

What health habits are you used to yo-yoing? Are they related to diet, exercise, sleep or something else? Think about why you approach your health habits this way. Sometimes fear can infiltrate a natural need to get healthy and make you feel like if you’re not doing everything then it’s just not worth it. This mindset can make you feel more deficient than it provides you with effective motivation, support, and momentum toward health. Feelings of fear and deficiency then become the basis for new health habits, and they don’t offer a very solid foundation.

This pendulum mentality obviously tells you that making smaller efforts more consistently isn’t good enough. But does it make sense? When you look at an athlete playing a sport, someone who does all or nothing doesn’t have the ability to practice good performance habits on a regular basis. Your health is the same way. Consistent habits, even on a small scale, will go much further than big efforts that last only a few days to a week. When you focus on quality rather than quantity in health, you’re taking a more realistic approach and one that your body will more openly welcome and sustain for a longer period of time.

Take a look at your health habits and find out if they are at risk of the chaotic yo-yo experience or are actually sustainable. Think about which of your habits have never lasted beyond the short term and why it might be. If you notice a yo-yo going on, brainstorm how you can reframe these habits into quality, longer-lasting expressions of health.

As you resist the urge to yo-yo and settle into more realistic and consistent health care routines, you’ll be amazed at how far your efforts will take you. The fears will be easier to deal with when you are not on the health roller coaster and the feelings of deficiency will be less frequent and will instead be replaced by a more natural confidence and motivation surrounding your health.
