Midlife Madness Or Cosmic Nudge?

Everyone hopes their marriage will last forever, everyone hopes their career future will be secure, everyone hopes they will age gracefully, everyone wants the security and assurance that they know what’s going on in their lives and when it’s happening. And that’s why we sit comfortably in the chair of our lives the one we sat in for twenty years of our marriage the one we slumped in every day for ten years after work the one we curled up in when things went wrong or something happened with the kids. But what happens when chapters are rewritten? What happens when the person you’ve slept with for twenty years moves their pillow to another house? What happens when the boss who went to your son’s wedding decides with the new out with the old? What happens when the body you’ve been traveling with for all these years no longer works as it should? What happens then? Midlife madness.

When you are with someone for a good part of your life, you lose part of your identity, this happens to even the most authentic people. How could you not begin to define yourself by the roles you play wife mother? Who you were seems less important than who you have become. So when your partner decides to walk away it’s like an amputation. All those things you did together now you have to do alone. Casual jobs once delegated to the best candidate now rest solely on your shoulders. Where once decisions were made jointly, resources were pooled and responsibilities shared, now all roads point to you.

Midlife madness has signs posted

On the road to self-condemnation turn here

Travel down this highway of guilt and shame

To fuel doubts and drain your self-esteem, stop here

And yes, there are pit stops of regrets and lost dreams

The greatest test of any human being is change. Change is that moment when the world as we know it ceases to exist. It’s when we’re challenged to expand our thinking, it’s when we’re challenged to define who we are in every sense of the word, and it’s when we get to see how far we’ve come and how far we still have to go in terms of our growth and healing.

When we are young change is always around us as we struggle to define ourselves and our place in the world is an accepted part of life. But as we get older the changes are less frequent, we build a world that is safe, secure and comfortable. We have a game plan that extends into retirement, we have a partner who will be there to celebrate the coming of age, we have financial security, a home, a circle of close friends who support us. Or this is our vision of our future. When change comes and throws all of this into chaos, we enter what I call midlife madness.

Let’s look at the first scenario as it seems the most common. Your once loving partner who swore to love you through thick and thin has a midlife crisis and decides he doesn’t love you anymore and in the blink of an eye he’s up and walking away.

For some women who have left their jobs to raise a family, this means loss of income and financial security. For others it means loss of identity for who you are if you are not Mrs. Someone. Some find friends torn between whose corner go too stop calling and big card also comes out age card because now your age is a neon sign your old man says who will want you now.

Some women will feel like they are drowning and will hold on to the first person who comes along a harbor in a storm as they say…usually this results in the same situation arising at a later date. When a relationship ends you really need to catch a breath and a break. Look at what role you may have played, it’s not to excuse a moral wrongdoing by your partner, etc., but to look at what things within the relationship may not have been as healthy as they should have been. Look at the communicative openness the sharing of emotions and feelings were the shared dreams really shared? What this does is give you a better understanding of what you want your next relationship to be like and what you need to contribute to make it the way you want it to be. If you had communication problems in your first relationship, perhaps the lesson to learn from this is how you can get to a point where you are able to speak your truth and listen to others. If you’ve been having intimacy issues, maybe class is a priority and time for each other. The goal is to look at whatever happened as a life lesson what can I take away from this experience that will help me grow and move forward as a person.

Age is a beautiful thing and finding a new partner to share your life with is not related to the amount of wrinkles on your face, it is deeply rooted in the beliefs you hold about yourself. Confident women who are as happy in their own company as they are in someone else’s who have explored their souls have accepted each other warts and all will attract a partner who has the same qualities. The secret isn’t having someone else tell you how beautiful you are, it’s being able to stand naked in front of a mirror and be able to look into your eyes and know that deep down inside you are a divine creation and your life can be anything. whether you want it to be with or without someone inside.

A partner who leaves us after many years of marriage highlights all that we have lost over the years, our youth, perhaps some dreams and ambitions, highlights how much of who we were as young adults has faded away, and reminds us of our own immortality. There are some things you need to think about

o Loss Any loss must be grieved Allow yourself to feel what you need to feel and give yourself time to feel it

o Before finding someone else, take the time to find yourself, otherwise the relationship will be based on an illusion

o Strength is often our greatest weakness, it’s okay to ask for help

o The greatest relationship you will ever have is with yourself becoming friends with your body, nurturing your spirit and creativity, and nurturing your mind

o Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder and the Higher Power, whoever you perceive it, sees you as a magnificent creation

The thing that causes most of our anxieties is money when your partner leaves it could take your means of survival with it. But this fear of the future can also occur when you get fired after many years of work when the boss decides that he can get a college degree for half the salary he pays you. Ageism is a fact. Unsurprisingly, most women who are faced with these scenarios go into beating mode. I’m not good enough, I’m not young enough, I’m too dumb, too old to learn, no one will want me now they allow doubt to creep up on them and every self suffocating message they’ve ever heard comes out to haunt them. The threat of debt hangs over their heads and the walls start closing in as the clock ticks.

Here are some things to think about

o Money is a tool learn how to use it go to a financial advisor

o Assets vs Stress and Anxiety. Is living in a big house worth your health? It’s worth noting that no one has ever slipped a Mercedes Benz through the pearly gates, but you can bet they never leave without telling someone they love them.

o Learn how to prioritize

o There is more than one route to a given destination. Don’t limit yourself to the things you feel are in your comfort zone, look at all the possibilities.

o Whatever job you take on to begin with, it doesn’t have to be concreted as the only thing you’ll ever do in your life. Be open and the universe will provide.

o You are never too old to learn new skills or go in a different direction. You simply have to throw your limitations out the window

o Who you are shows going into an interview believing they can find someone better and that will show that and chances are they will find someone else.

o If a door closes, consider the possibility that you should never have gone through it

Losing a partner or job may or may not happen, but one thing is for sure, time will always leave its mark on our bodies. It’s not for me to tell anyone to just allow age to come gracefully and give up the things of youth. Some have no desire to do that. However it is wise to point out that if your concept of who you are is tied to appearances then you will never truly find peace as time will always be one step ahead. It’s a personal perspective for some, there comes a day when you look in the mirror and you don’t recognize the body you see. Stand there dumbfounded thinking when I got old? With age comes medical issues too, the things we once did are no longer possible. It’s about acceptance and being at peace with our bodies and physical appearance.

The most beautiful woman can be the most unpleasant and vice versa. Who you are determines your beauty, not your looks. Do what feels right for you. Doing something special and nourishing your spirit is always healthy. If this is getting a massage or going to the spa, do it. If it’s putting on a bathing suit and not worrying about a few extra pounds that weren’t there last summer, good for you. If you’re doing something because it’s something that brings you joy or makes you happy again, good for you, but if you’re doing it to fit a stereotype of beauty projected by the media etc. or you think the only way anyone will love you is if you physically recreate yourself, then you are delusional. Love begins with yourself then extends outward.

Change comes to everyone at some point in their life, it doesn’t have to be the event that destroys your life, but the event that gives birth to a new life for you. You don’t have to fast forward, there is time and you should make time to mourn the loss of a partner’s job, even the passing of years and lost youth. Then you should forgive anyone or anything that needs to be forgiven. Anger and guilt are still from a past life let them go if you want to move on forgive accept let go and move on. Forgive yourself, let go of powers, perks, perks, they are redundant. You can’t rewrite the past but you can shape the future. Find yourself what you like don’t like what your dreams are or were. Spend some time alone. Look for the lessons learned from them to build a stronger foundation. I absolutely believe that everything will be fine. Throw the shame, the guilt, the pride out the window and while you’re at it throw away the personal recriminations as well. Ask for help ask for help ask for help ask for help. What does not asking for help do? Besides keeping you where you are? Healthy people looking to build a healthy life will ask for help, accept it, and use it to build the life they want.

Midlife madness or just the Higher Power saying it’s time for a change. Either way it doesn’t have to be overwhelming or anxiety filled take a breath take a step back take another breath then step forward you can do it what a wonderful opportunity for something new and big to come into your life. You are a traveler on the highway of life and the journey has just begun.
