Womanhood and Entrepreneurship: An Uphill Struggle
This article sheds light on the dynamics of female entrepreneurs in India and how they have chosen to make choices that have been socially relevant and impactful.
To all of you who are still blissfully ignorant of what the double burden is, I suggest that you take this time to tune in to the reality of women. Of women and their stories that show triumph, courage, tenacity, kindness, love and above all passion. When we talk about women in India, we mostly ignore the second shift (another name that is commonly given to the double burden).
Unpaid work is a social construct, very typical and in most cases crudely defined as “a duty of women”. Because if you don’t chain yourself to the social conventions of domestic oppression, you’re accused of being “unfeminine” (the horror) and we all know that’s not a label Indian women should strive for.
This is an ode to women, women who have consciously chosen to overcome those struggles, past all accusations, glossing over all hurtful comments, and most importantly, constantly giving Indian society an existential crisis. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t just for women who have become successful entrepreneurs.
It is for women who have been employed and unemployed, for financial independence and to fight financial oppression, for changing social norms and for the struggle, to be extraordinary by not just choosing to exist, but actively living, seeking, fighting and winning.
1- Aditi Gupta
How many times have you been ashamed about your period? How often do you check your “that area” in “those days?”. Aditi Gupta has answered our prayers. Menstruation is as taboo as women’s rights in India, as it is best to pretend that both do not exist. Aditi Gupta has decided to clear up the darkness surrounding this common problem by introducing Menstrupedia.
It’s a women-friendly guide to staying active, healthy, and mindful during your period. It sets out to explore this issue from various angles: hygiene, awareness, feminism and culture, to mention just a few.
Anu Sridharan had this unquenchable thirst to combine technology and society to enable us to exploit the full potential of staying informed. You founded NextDrop with a simple vision: “We want to rid the world of its water problems.”
With rapid urbanization and development constantly leading to water scarcity, its technology platform helps people to be aware of access to water, the quality and quantity associated with it. They use real-time data to disseminate information on the status of water services, inconsistencies with supply pattern and supply time, etc.
3- Padmaja Ruparel
Padmaja started the Indian Angel Network in 2009 and has since become an integral part of the business ecosphere in India. In 2009, she saw an opportunity to tap into a culture that neither supported nor funded entrepreneurship.
“VCs started investing in startups in India more than a decade ago but have always invested money raised overseas. The trend is changing but VCs still predominantly raise money overseas. This figure was huge and as a startup early stage, he wouldn’t know what to do with those huge sums of money and the VCs wouldn’t even invest in. So I thought early stage investment is a gap and so I started IAN,” says Padmaja.
Prukalpa founded SocialCops together with Varun Banka in hopes of using data to solve critical global challenges. Having a background in investment banking, she realized the impact of data when it came to financial banking. However, she continued to draw parallels about how health care, education, crime, the environment, and the broader development sector lacked relevant data to exploit in the same way. Quite interesting, Crowdfunding helped this project become a reality.
We hope these 5 women have already started to inspire you. Being your own boss has never been an easy job, plus with society cracking down on you on all fronts, the journey will definitely not be an easy one. Nothing worth having comes easy, we all try to beat the odds and stay grounded in our vision.
“We learned that governments and other organizations have been collecting a lot of data from citizens across the country on different issues. The problem is not that there is no data; it is that the data is really hard to access and use. It exists on numerous government websites, which are difficult to locate and navigate. Once the data is accessed, it is difficult to use because it is inconsistent and unstructured. A big part of our work has been finding all these obscure government datasets, cleaning them and combine them with other datasets to make them reliable and usable,” he notes.
5-Elsa Marie D’Silva
If every 20 minutes someone is raped and not all rapes are reported, can you imagine the number of women who are harassed on the street every day?” asks Elsa Marie De’Silva.” It is this horrible thought that prompted Elsa, Surya and Saloni to establish a safe city. It is a GIS (Geographic Information System) mapping and uses open source technology to facilitate crowdmapping of information. It is a platform that documents personal experiences of sexual abuse and harassment in public places in hotspots that match location-based trends. Women can choose to remain anonymous when reporting, the primary goal is reporting and awareness.
