The Essential Differences Between Owner Operators and Company Drivers

When you go out with each passing day, you are sure to lay eyes on trucks with supplies and cargo being transported to different destinations. Basically, these trucks fall into two categories: driver-owned trucks (the driver is the owner of the truck) and company-owned trucks. Owner operators are truckers who own their own trucks and only carry truckloads from the company. On the other hand, we have owned trucks, where the company owns the truck and the driver is hired as a company driver. In fact, there are many things that make these two categories of truckers different from each other and this article will lay out those differences, detailing the role each of them play.

It is always best for people who have just gotten their CDI to become company truckers. For starters, this would allow you to make the decision whether or not to become a truck owner or semi-trailer owner. This start should also be a stepping stone to becoming an experienced truck driver with a great reputation in the industry before joining the ranks of owner operator.

To begin with, a company driver is one who receives a truck from their employer. As for payment, they are paid by the hour or by the mile depending on whether they are driving local or interstate. The company takes care of everything related to the truck: insurance, payment for the truck, repairs, etc. The company pays all fuel costs. In fact, most company truck drivers can drive the newer trucks as the company regularly changes their fleet of trucks for customer satisfaction.

On the other hand, owner operators own their own trucks and, in fact, tend to rack up more income than the company driver. While they generate more cash, they also have a pretty high overhead. They are in charge of covering repairs, payments, maintenance and insurance. However, they are free to use a broker to carry whatever they choose to carry. They could haul truckloads or lease their trucks to a company in need. Unlike the company driver who has little or no say in the loads he hauls, the truck owner has a say in the loads he hauls.

While on the road, the company truck driver will have phone calls, showers and food available unlike the truck owner himself. Some employers provide drivers with a daily allowance to cover these needs. This allowance, a per diem, is usually included in the drivers’ compensation package. As such, the driver would still have to pay out of his own pocket and then, when he receives the check, be reimbursed. Considering that the driver is not able to use what is foreseen for his daily expenses, he could accumulate some extra income compared to the Owner operators who would have to take care of it personally without being reimbursed.

As a company trucker, you have the option of purchasing health insurance and should be given paid vacation time off. This is always the case when the driver has been with the company for some time. Generally, these extras always depend on the regulations and specifics of the company in question. This does not apply to truck owners, as they take care of all their needs.

Unlike company truck drivers, owner operators are responsible for their own fuel, meals, showers, etc. be reimbursed with their pay package. Also, money for repairs must be set aside in case unpleasant problems arise while on the road. In addition, owner operators must take care of their own personal health insurance and if they take time off, they will not receive any payment for that time.
