What is a Day of Sail Training on The Elissa Like?

All gather into the shop between 8 and 9 AM for A Day of Sail Training on Elissa with some getting involved in helping to get ready for the day. An individual in charge will assign various duties such as making up the ice water for the day, scrubbing and hosing down the deck and polishing the brass. One wants to be sure and check the station bill to see which mast and watch they are assigned for the day.

We are called to muster at the main mast about 9:00 AM for roll call and announcements. The officer of the day then instructs one watch to report ashore for maintenance duty and the other watch to report to their mast for sail training.

The sail training portion of the day will eventually involve the crew in every aspect of how to sail a square rig and work will be done on each mast. There are some tasks assigned at each mast while other tasks are assumed by who gets there first. The challenge is to learn the process so we can be ready for the next task before we hear the command.

When we have the command to come about, there are several steps that occur before we actually start to bring the yards around. Hauling on the yards is everyone’s job and when we are out on daysails, we do our best to recruit guests to help.

The sail training portion of the day includes sail handling as well as man overboard drills, fire drills and abandon ship drills. We want to get these drills down pat for our own safety and the Coast Guard Inspection which occurs before we begin our annual day sails.

A sailor’s life isn’t complete until they have a good handle on knot tying, so there is practice on this as well. Keep in mind, when we sail the overnight during our annual sea trials, much of the work will be done in complete darkness. I don’t mention that to intimidate anyone because that event is a lot of fun and quite a learning experience. Keeping that in mind, however, is all the more reason to do some homework now and then on the many different facets of learning to sail a square rigger.

You might recall that after the morning muster, half the crew went ashore for their maintenance assignments. Maintenance of the Elissa is a never-ending task. Just about the time we think we have all the teak looking great on the cap rail, it is time to start all over again.

Maintenance can be sanding, varnishing, chipping paint, rust busting (there is always one more spot of rust), tarring, sealing the deck, working aloft, and yes, even cleaning the bilges. So, no matter what your skill set, there will be some important task for you to accomplish that makes a difference. Our maintenance of the ship keeps her seaworthy and looking sharp for the museum guests.

If we have loosened sails for the training, sometime around 3 or 3:30 PM some will be called on to go aloft and furl all sails in preparation for ending the sail training experience. When that is done and the deck is cleaned up and ready for guests, muster is called sometime before 5 PM. There are usually a few announcements and comments about how things went for the day.

Hopefully, the day has been a good learning experience for everyone, no matter what the task accomplished. Most importantly, it is one more step towards the day when we can all take her sailing and prove our worth as an official crew member.

Most of the time, we are dismissed at 5:00 PM and we can then share some refreshments and really get serious about what happened or maybe should have happened during the day.
